mysterious fever :(
so it's been a couple of days passed already and isabela is fine now but man did she have us worried! it all started on sunday morning when we were getting ready to head out with jaccob's cousin tina and her family. we were about to get her dressed to go out when we noticed she felt really hot. we took her temperature and sure enough, she had a fever. the rest of the day she couldn't keep anything down and for the next day her fever wouldn't go down even with all the tylenol and motrin we gave her.
i made an appointment on tuesday to go see a doctor. of course when i took her to the appointment her fever had disappeared and she seemed absolutely fine. he did notice her throat was a little red so he took a swab of it and had it tested at the lab to see if she had strep or not. thankfully it came back negative and her blood count seemed normal which meant no infection. he told me that if within the next 12 or 24 hours she developed a fever of 101 that he wanted me to collect a urine sample and take it back to the lab. i left thinking she was no longer sick and the rest of the day she was fine. to my surprise though, that night around midnight she started crying so i went into her room to check on her and she felt hot again! i took her temperature again and it was 102.9!!! i freaked out and couldn't go back to sleep. i made the decision to take her to the emergency room. when we got there the nurse evaluated her and took a rectal temp. and it was 103.1! eventually a doctor got to see her and they ran another test for strep which came back negative. they also had to use a catheter to collect a urine sample which they tested and came back normal.
since there wasn't anything else they could do at that point they told me to just take her back home and monitor her level of fussiness, how much she slept, how much she played with her toys and how much she ate and drank. they said the fever might come back for another day or two and that if it was still high, 102 or 103, and didn't go down with tylenol or motrin to bring her back in or take her to the clinic we always go to. thankfully her fever never came back and she's been fine ever since :) her mysterious fever never came back and i couldn't be more relieved!
i may have written something along these lines before in another blog but this incident just had me so worried, and well, being pregnant and hormonal doesn't help...
i never knew fear more now that i am a mother. seeing your child sick is the scariest and most frightening thing in the world, especially when you can't do anything for them. that's the worst part, being completely helpless and unable to take away their suffering, no matter how bad you wish you could take their place :( my mom always tells me that feeling like that comes with being a mother and that no matter how old your children get you will always wish you could take their place. i'm 28 and my sister is 29 and she still sees us as her two little girls! i'm sure i will still be like this when isabela is 30!
